Questions & Answers

Q: Can you tell us about Bossy Cosmetics?

Bossy Cosmetics is a beauty brand that exists to ignite confidence in ambitious women. We offer high-quality, vegan, cruelty-free, and clean makeup products. Our brand also focuses on providing topical content and essential services that empower women.

Q: How did you transition from investment banking to starting your own beauty brand?

Growing up as a first-generation American with Nigerian parents, I felt the pressure to pursue a stable career path. I studied finance to pay for my education and eventually ended up in investment banking. However, after facing health issues and realizing that I wasn't truly happy, I decided to make a change. My passion for makeup and the desire to empower women led me to start Bossy Cosmetics.

Q: How did you come up with the idea for Bossy Cosmetics?

During my fellowship at Stanford, I had the opportunity to explore different ideas and passions. I wanted to do something with color and women empowerment, so I started talking to women about confidence. I discovered that there was a connection between how women look, how they feel, and how they perform. This insight inspired me to create a makeup brand that could boost confidence and empower women.

Q: Did you seek funding for your business?

Initially, I tried to secure funding from venture capitalists but faced multiple rejections. Many people didn't understand the connection between beauty and work, and they doubted the potential of my idea. Despite these setbacks, I decided to self-finance and received support from friends who believed in my vision. Starting small allowed me to be scrappy and focus on my customers' needs.

Q: How did the COVID-19 pandemic impact your business?

The pandemic caused disruptions in our supply chain, and we faced challenges in launching new products. Our one-year anniversary launch had to be delayed because of production delays in Italy. However, during this time, I engaged with my customers through email and social media. I talked about various topics and built a community around the brand. In June, we experienced a surge in orders and attention as people started looking for quality black-owned businesses. This unexpected growth opened doors to new opportunities with major retailers.

Q: What advice do you have for entrepreneurs starting a business during challenging times?

If you have the privilege and resources to take the risk, this is a great time to start a business. There are funds and grants available for entrepreneurs, and people have needs that can be fulfilled. It's important to focus on your customers and their desires and to keep experimenting and improving. This is a time where the barriers to entry are low, and with determination and resilience, you can succeed.

Q: Can you talk about the name "Bossy Cosmetics"?

The name "Bossy" represents the women I'm trying to empower. It's a term that has often been used in a negative way to describe women who want their voices heard. I wanted to reclaim and redefine the term, showing that being bossy means being confident and assertive. The name resonated with many women who related to being called bossy and understood the power behind it.

Q: How did you adapt to the challenges faced by your supply chain?

When the pandemic hit, I had to quickly adjust my supply chain as our California-based suppliers shut down. I worked with global suppliers in Italy, China, and Germany. However, the closures in these countries caused delays. But as things gradually began to reopen, I was able to get products and meet the increased demand. It was a learning experience, and I had to remain flexible and adapt to the circumstances.

Q: What role did social media play in the growth of Bossy Cosmetics?

Social media has been integral to our growth, especially during the pandemic. It allowed me to connect with our community, engage in meaningful conversations, and share updates. In June, the algorithm seemed to change, and people started actively looking for black-owned businesses. This led to increased visibility for Bossy Cosmetics, and we received attention from major retailers who wanted to work with us. Social media has been a powerful tool for us to reach our target audience and build brand recognition.

Q: How did the Black Lives Matter movement impact your business?

The Black Lives Matter movement brought attention to black-owned businesses. With consumers actively seeking out black-owned brands, we experienced a surge in orders and interest. It was unexpected, but it opened up opportunities for us to collaborate with major retailers who were signing on to the 15% Pledge. The movement shone a spotlight on the importance of supporting diverse businesses, and we benefited from that awareness.

Q: What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs?

I encourage aspiring entrepreneurs to take the risk and start their businesses, especially during challenging times. It's crucial to understand your privilege and resources and to utilize available funds and grants. Find your passion, focus on the customers' needs, and keep improving. Remember that starting small and taking little steps can lead to significant growth. Embrace resilience, experiment, and don't be afraid to make mistakes. This is an exciting time to start a business, and you have the power to make a difference.

Takeaways

Starting a business during challenging times can be daunting, but it can also present unique opportunities. Aisha Fatima Dossier's journey with Bossy Cosmetics highlights the importance of resilience, adaptability, and focusing on the needs of customers. The pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement had unexpected impacts on her business, ultimately leading to growth and visibility. Despite initial rejections, Aisha's determination and passion drove her to start her own venture. Her success serves as a reminder that great businesses can flourish even in the face of adversity.
